Zygopetalum, Orchid

  About Tim & Esther

Zygopetalum is a genus of epiphytic or terrestrial orchids in the family Orchidaceae, comprising 14 species. The genus is distributed in South America regions, especially in Brazil, where they can be found in humid forest at low to mid elevation. The genus name is derived from Greek word 'Zygon' meaning yoked petal, in reference to the yoke-like growth at the base of the lip (the fusion of sepals and petals).

Zygopetalum species have deciduous ovoid-conical pseudobulbs with a robust growth form. The leaves are glossy, strap-like and plicate. The racemose inflorescence is 60 cm long, with a few flowers. The inflorescence grows laterally and is longer than the leaves. The fragrant and waxy flowers come in shades of green, purple, burgundy and raspberry, with several patterns. These flowers last for a long time with multiple blooms. Zygopetalum species are easy to grow and are excellent cut flowers.
