Vanda, Orchid

  About Tim & Esther

Vanda is a genus of epiphytic, but sometimes lithophytic or terrestrial orchids in the family Orchidaceae, comprising about 50 species. Vanda is one the the most important genus in the floral industry. Vanda species are distributed in India, Himalaya, SE Asia, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea, southern China and northern Australia.

Vanda has a monopodial growth habit with leaves and stems that are variable according to habitat and species. Some have strap leaves that are flat, broad and ovoid. Some have terete leaves that are cylindrical, fleshy and adaptable to dry periods. The lateral inflorescences bear a few to many flattened flowers, usually yellow-brown color with brown markings, but they also come in white, green, yellow, red, orange, blue, purple, and burgundy shades. The lip has a small spur. Healthy Vandas usually bloom every few months and the flowers can last for 2-3 weeks.
