Sarcochilus, Orchid

  About Tim & Esther

Sarcochilus is a genus of epiphytic or lithophytic orchids in the family Orchidaceae, comprising 15 species. Sarcochilus species are endemic to Northern Australia, Eastern Australia, Tasmania and New Caledonia. It is abbreviated as Sarco in horticultural trade. The genus Sarcochilus is derived from Greek words sarx (meaning flesh) and cheilos (means lip), in referring to the fleshy labellum of these orchids.

Sarcochilus species are compact plants (15 cm tall) with a monopodial growth habit. They branch freely at the base and forming dense clumps. The leaves are produced from pseudobulbs. Each mature plant in the clump will produce 2-5 racemes. The axillary, racemose inflorescence is pendant to arching, producing 3-25 colorful and fragrant flowers.

Sarcochilus species grow well in high humidity, exceptional air movement and moderate to low light conditions.
