Malaxis, Orchid

  About Tim & Esther

Malaxis is a genus of terrestrial and semi-epiphytic orchids in the family Orchidaceae, comprising about 250 species. It is commonly known as Adder's Mouth.

Malaxis unifolia is a native of US, and grows well in mesic to dry upland woods, typically on acidic substrates. It produces a leaf per flowering stem. The erect flowering stem is 30 cm tall, herbaceous, glabrous and slightly angled. Most of the time a much smaller leaf can be found near the base of the stem. The single leaf is ovate, entire, glabrous, green on top and silvery-green on the bottom, 8 cm long and 5 cm broad. The inflorescence is a terminal raceme with many small green flowers. Flowering period is between month of May to July.
