Dendrochilum, Orchid

  About Tim & Esther

Dendrochilum is a genus of epiphytic, lithophytic and terrestrial orchids in the family Orchidaceae, comprising about 120-150 species. It is native to South East Asia and New Guinea, but most species are found in Borneo and the Philippines. Dendrochilum is distributed at higher elevations in the humid rainforests. Dendrochilum is abbreviated as Ddc in horticultural trade.

Dendrochilum has ovoid to cylindrical, striped pseudobulbs (4-10 cm long), with green to brown bracts at the base. Each pseudobulbs produces 1-2 tough, erect, elliptical-lance shaped leaves, about 20 cm long with narrow petioles. The inflorescence can grow to 50 cm long, and small, fragrant, star-shaped flowers are borne on two rows. Dendrochilum is valued for its fragrant flowers.
