Barkeria, Orchid

  About Tim & Esther

Barkeria is a genus of deciduous orchids in the family Orchidaceae, comprising about 15 species. It is native to Mexico, and is abbreviated as Bark in horticultural trade. The genus Barkeria was named in honor of George Barker of Springfield, England, who had imported a plant from Mexico.

Barkeria species are found in central Mexico to Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, growing in the dry scrub area at intermediate to low elevations. They have cane-like pseudobulbs, varying from 2.5 -30 cm in height. The inflorescences are apical, erect or arching, and may be branched, carrying 6-20 flowers. These plants drop their leaves in early winter and become dormant. Barkeria species grow on small shrubs, and on small branches of trees, responding well to intermediate to warm temperatures. Their roots are freely exposed to moving air.

All Barkeria species have showy, long lasting and nodding flowers except Barkeria skinneri.
